Rehoming your dog?
Great Dane Rescue & Rehoming primarily act as a match making service i.e. if you have a Great Dane you wish to re-home that meets our criteria we will actively promote your Great Dane on our Website, Facebook Group and to our extensive contact list.
Dane Crosses
Sorry, we do not take surrenders of Dane crosses, although we would love to help them, we struggle to find the resources for the Danes as it is. If a Dane x is in the Pound then please contact Big Dog Rescue as they may be able to assist however they do not take surrenders.
The following NSW Rescue Shelters maybe able to assist you if you need to surrender your Dane x: click here
Dane x Puppies
If you have Dane x puppies under 6 months of age, please contact us as we may have an alternative solution for you.
Surrendering your Great Dane
From time to time we will take surrenders depending on room & funding available.
THERE ARE CURRENTLY 0 OF 3 SPACES AVAILABLE FOR SURRENDERS / POUND DANES
Surrenders are boarded with our Behaviourist Craig Murray of Premier Dog Training at Bringelly in Sydney.
As of November 2011, there is a $300.00 surrender fee which will cover the first months boarding / expenses (Paid directly to the Boarding Operator). In cases of financial hardship you will be asked to prove this financial hardship to have the surrender may fee waved.
Please do not lie to us, we are not government funded, expenses come out of our own pocket and therefore sometimes we cannot take on surrenders due to there not being enough funding available at that time.
All surrenders must spend a minimum of 2 weeks at the kennels to undergo assessment and basic behavioural modification.
Any dogs surrendered with basic behavioural problems i.e. needs to learn manners and boundaries will remain in care until the time that they are deemed suitable for re-homing.
Click here to download Surrender information, in addition, please also complete a form to tell us all about your dog.
Does your Dane act aggressively and / or intimates people?
It is unlikely we will be able to assist you, however please touch base and we can talk about the situations where this aggression has occurred, provide you with advice and let you know how we can assist (if we can).
Has your Dane been aggressive to other dogs?
The only way we are happy to promote dogs who have been aggressive to other dogs is that they are surrendered to our behavioural Boot Camp where they cam be rehabbed and re-homed when there is no further aggression to other dogs.
Dogs with aggression
Any surrenders with dog to dog aggression or human aggression will undergo behavioural modification however you will need to be prepared for the fact that in the end we may deem them unsuitable for rehoming.
If after 30 days we deem your dog not suitable for rehoming we will ask you to come and pick up the dog or arrange transportation to pick up the dog.
Sending your Aggressive Dog to a Pound or All Breeds Shelter:
Please do not send your dog with dog to dog aggression or human aggression to a pound or surrender to an all breeds rescue - the likelyhood of them making it out alive is slim.
Please do not privately rehome your dog with dog to dog aggression or human aggression - the average Joe Citizen does not have the skill level to rehabilitate such dogs and you may be held legally liable if anything happens.
We legally are unable to take any dogs that have been deemed dangerous by your Council.
If you have an aggressive dog, please consult a Behaviourist and Vet for Assistance. You may need to consider putting your dog to sleep surrounded by the people it knows and loves rather than the possibility of being put to sleep in a strange environment surrounded by people it does not know. Please feel free to contact us for Behaviourist recommendations.
Is your Dog an Escape Artist?
If you dog can escape fencing that typical homes would have we will not be able to assist you. People looking for Danes on our contact lists do not typically have roofed Dog Pens or other means to contain a dog who wants to escape all the time. Chaining a dog is cruel and not something we support.
Please contact us for solutions on how to keep your dog on your yard. Please note most Shelters also do not accept Dogs who are escape artists and if you do surrender your dog to them it will be put to sleep so be sure you know what will happen to your dog if you are surrendering it to a shelter.
Is your Dane a pedigree with papers?
If your dog is a Pedigree Great Dane you will need to contact your Breeder to let them know the situation, otherwise we are required to as this is our policy when dealing with pedigree Great Danes, if there is a legitimate reason why you do not want the breeder advised then we can discuss that with you.
Old Dogs / Dogs with Health Issues
Please be aware that we may notify you (taking into account each dogs individual circumstance) that your dog may be unlikely to be adopted by the general public and therefore we may not be able to assist you and depending on the degree of seriousness of the condition you may need to consider euthanasia.
Please note we sadly do not accept surrenders who have allergic skin disease where they are being (or should be) medicated and can not come off medication.
